About the School

The School of Mechanical Engineering is a premier school and was founded well over 3 decades ago. Its precincts sprawling old-world charm lends it a unique character. The colorful Poster displays along its many walls tell its unique story. SMEC has an inviting and friendly feel and this has been its tradition since its inception.

SMEC majorly comprises all fields of Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineering disciplines. The School has about 174 faculty members sourced from some of the top Institutes of higher learning worldwide (including Phds from the top IITs, IISc and Research led overseas Universities). Apart from its Faculty strength, SMEC has an additional distinguished attainment-it continues to attract the ablest students year after year who publish high quality peer reviewed International Journal Papers with high Impact Factor along with their Faculty mentors, and participate in competitions and receive many International awards from many student fora (PRAVEGA, ASSAILING FALCONS, VIMANAAS, JABAAZ, OJAS).

SMEC is also known for its world leading International collaborations, particularly for its very strong links with world-leading British Universities in the form of MoUs and UKIERI Grants, and places it among the best performing Mechanical Engineering Departments anywhere in the country. It is officially partnered with Cranfield University with active ongoing dual Master’s and exchange programmes. SMECs academic visitors have included Scientists from the world over. The pride of the school lies in the significant research funding received from several government agencies such DRDO, BRNS, ISRO, UGC, AICTE, and DST. Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various industries, research, organisations and leading universities, such as CMTI, Bangalore; IGCAR, Chennai, IIT Madras and Anna University have also been signed. Industrial relationships with L&T, Hindustan Corporation ltd., DLF, CCL, Indian Oil, Gammon India, TATA Consultancy and Godrej etc. have helped enhance teaching and research in the school.
